Who is Dignity?

For generations, Dignity has been helping to make funeral planning as easy and stress-free as possible. Since 1985 when we launched the UK’s first Funeral Plan, more than 743,000 people have made financial provisions for funeral costs in advance with us. We now have a network of over 1,200 funeral directors who are either owned or approved by Dignity. Last year Dignity conducted over 70,700 funerals. If you’d like to find out more about Dignity, please visit our Why Choose Dignity? page.

What is a Funeral Plan?

A Funeral Plan is a way to prepay funeral costs in advance. It also allows you to help protect your family from the worry and stress of making all the arrangements. If you would like to find out more visit our What's A Funeral Plan? page.

Why should I take out a Funeral Plan?

Taking out a Prepaid Funeral Plan allows you to make important decisions about what you and your family wants from the funeral. Once it’s paid, we will not request a penny more for the services included in the Plan, so you’ll have complete peace of mind, knowing you have financially prepared.

Taking out a Funeral Plan will also help save your loved ones the worry and stress of making all the funeral arrangements at such an emotional time, because they will already know what you wanted and a trusted Dignity Nominated Funeral Director will be there to guide and support them every step of the way.

I have savings and life insurance, why do I need a Funeral Plan?

Savings and life insurance don’t guarantee to cover your funeral costs – whereas a Prepaid Funeral Plan does. And with funeral expenses rising year on year, you may find that savings and life insurance aren’t enough to cover the cost of the funeral. In addition, banks and over 50s life insurance providers will not arrange your funeral, but Dignity will.

If you take out a Prepaid Funeral Plan from Dignity, you can freeze funeral costs at today’s prices, so no matter how much they rise, the cost of the cremation funeral services included in the Plan will be guaranteed – meaning that loved ones are less likely to have to use any savings or inheritance you may have left them. What’s more, the funeral will be planned and paid for, so your loved ones won’t have the added stress of making all of the arrangements at a difficult and emotional time.

It’s also worth noting that for inheritance tax planning purposes, a Funeral Plan sits outside the estate. For more information, visit Best Way To Take Care Of Funeral Costs.

Can anyone take out a Dignity Funeral Plan?

Anyone aged 50 or over can take out a Prepaid Funeral Plan from Dignity. There are no upper age limits. There are no health or medical questions.

What does a Dignity Funeral Plan include?

Dignity’s Prepaid Funeral Plans include the Funeral Director services. If a cremation is required the third party costs are included. If a burial is required a contribution of £1,200 will be paid towards the burial and other third party costs. For more information, take a look at Dignity’s choice of Prepaid Funeral Plans – or call us to discuss your options further.

Does the Plan allow you to choose the Funeral Director?

The Limited Plan has a restricted choice from approximately 800 Funeral Directors. If you’d like to find your nearest funeral director, or if you have a specific funeral director in mind and would like to know if they’re available through the Plan, please call us.

Can I buy a Funeral Plan for someone else?

Yes. Many of our customers take out a Prepaid Funeral Plan from Dignity for their relatives or friends . For more information, visit our Buying For Someone Else page.

Do I have to take a medical?

No. As long as you’re aged 50 or over, you’re guaranteed to be accepted for a Prepaid Funeral Plan from Dignity.

Can I personalise my Funeral Plan?

Yes, you can personalise your Funeral Plan as much or as little as you like, or we can create a completely bespoke Funeral Plan just for you. Simply call us on 0800 58 72 541 and we’ll help you arrange everything. For more information, visit our Personalising Your Plan page

Can I make personal requests for my funeral?

Yes, you can add personal requests to your Funeral Plan at any time, without a charge. For example, you could leave instructions on where to hold the service, what flowers to get and even which hymns to sing. By adding these little extras to your Plan, you can give your loved ones the reassurance of knowing that everything is being done the way you want it to be. Some requests may incur an additional cost. With our Amber, Pearl and Diamond funeral plans, you can choose to make an extra contribution towards these personal requests, which will rise each year in line with inflation, or the additional cost can be met by your loved ones at the time.

The Limited Plan does not allow you to add any additional services or make any additional contributions towards special requests.

Can I prepay for a cremation funeral?

Yes, all Prepaid Funeral Plans from Dignity are guaranteed to cover the cost of the Funeral Director services and the third party cremation costs specified – these are cremation fees and minister's or officiants' fees. Some other providers only provide a contribution towards the cremation costs.

A note on Doctors’ medical certification fees.

For deaths where a coroner investigation is required, there are no medical certification fees to be paid. Also, changes to legislation in May 2015 mean there will no longer be a charge for a medical certification for any deaths registered in Scotland. Similar legal changes are being considered for the rest of the UK, so we do not include provision for these fees in our Plans.

If the funeral takes place outside of Scotland, and a coroner is not involved, then if applicable, the medical certification fees must be paid by the next of kin or personal representative, when arranging the funeral.

Can I prepay for a burial funeral?

Yes. All Prepaid Funeral Plans from Dignity are available for burial funerals. . However, we are unable to guarantee the cost of burial as costs vary significantly from region to region.

When you choose a burial Funeral Plan, the Funeral Director services included in the Plan are guaranteed to be covered plus you will receive a contribution of £1,200 towards burial and other third party costs, which will each year rise each year in-line with RPI inflation. For more information, visit our Burial Option page.

Could there be any other expenses for the funeral, and what happens if there are?

Dignity’s Prepaid Funeral Plan ensures that once it’s paid all the services included in the Plan will be covered irrespective of when the funeral is required. However, your family may wish to add things like flowers or a service at a separate location, when the time comes. If this is the case, we will help them with all the arrangements and they would need to pay for them at the time of the funeral or if you prefer a payment can be made in addition to the plan price which will rise in line with inflation as a contribution towards this cost.

How do I know which Funeral Director will look after the arrangements?

If you choose and Amber, Pearl or Diamond Plan, Dignity will appoint a Nominated Funeral Director from their network of over 1,200 owned and approved Funeral Directors throughout the UK. If you choose a Limited Plan, Dignity will chose from their owned network of 800 Funeral Directors. If you have a specific Funeral Director in mind and would like to know if they’re available through the Plan please call us.

How do I pay online?

It’s easy to arrange your Prepaid Funeral Plan online and we use the latest security technology to protect your payments. If you choose to make a single payment, you can use either a credit or debit card. Alternatively, you can take advantage of one of our flexible payment options by setting up a Direct Debit.

Do I have to pay all at once?

No. We have a range of ways to pay for your chosen Funeral Plan. You can spread the cost over 15 years. Please visit our Compare Our Plans page for further information.

If I choose to pay by instalments, what options are there?

You can spread the cost of your Funeral Plan over 12 months, at no extra cost. Or, if you prefer, you can spread the cost over an extended period of up to 15 years. However, if you choose to spread the cost over more than 12 months, an administration fee will be added. This charge is needed to make sure the money paid into the Trust Fund can increase in line with Inflation during the term of the Plan and means that we can still provide the guaranteed services in the Agreement, irrespective of when the Funeral Plan is required. For more information, see our Compare Our Plans page.

What happens if the person the Funeral Plan is intended for dies abroad or away from home?

If the Planholder passes away abroad, it’s the responsibility of their Next of Kin to arrange repatriation. The cost of this is usually covered by their travel insurance. However, if the Planholder passes away in the UK, the Plan will be activated and we’ll arrange for them to be brought to the Nominated Funeral Director. Any additional mileage above that included in the Plan will be chargeable.

Can the Nominated Funeral Director arrange a funeral of a different standard from the one I've chosen in my plan?

Your Dignity Nominated Funeral Director must provide all the services outlined in your Plan and they must meet our high quality standards. However, if your family wishes to add to the Plan at the time of the funeral, they can. For example, they could upgrade the coffin or add an extra limousine to the Plan, or they could arrange for readings, hymns or special pieces of music to be played. Some requests may incur additional costs, which, similarly, are not included in the Plan. Please visit our Terms & Conditions.

What happens if I move house?

Your Prepaid Funeral Plans are portable, so you can use them anywhere in mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man (Limited Plan not available on the Isle of Man). If you move home, simply tell Dignity your new address and we will update our records.

What if my chosen Funeral Director goes out of business?

First, let us assure you that your Prepaid Funeral Plan is protected, no matter what happens to Dignity. You should also know that it’s very unlikely that any of Dignity’s Funeral Directors will go out of business. However, if this did happen, or if one of our approved funeral directors went out of business, your Plan would simply be moved to another Dignity owned or approved Funeral Director and we would provide confirmation of who this is.

What happens if there are any outstanding instalments at death?

Unlike some other providers, we don’t automatically cancel the Plan should a client pass away with payments outstanding. Instead, we still guarantee to provide the funeral at the same cost that was originally agreed provided that your loved ones agree to pay the remaining balance at the time of the funeral.

Limited Plan - additional restrictions to above:

There is a restricted choice from approximately 800 Funeral Directors. A restricted choice of date and time for the funeral will be available. Typically this means that with the Limited Funeral Plan the service will take place before 10.30am or after 3.30pm Tuesday-Thursday. You may not make any additional contributions towards the costs of any special requests. Not available on the Isle of Man.
